Closing the cross-shaped formation, behind The Platets and the Standard-Bearer, the final character of the Dance of Death appears: The Clock.
Typically portrayed by a child or teenager (a smaller skeleton), its role is to bring the macabre choreography to a close. If the Capdanser opens the dance with the scythe, The Clock ends it, reminding us that time has run out.
The Mystery of the Hands: Why Doesn’t It Tell Time?
This character’s defining feature is, of course, the large clock (often square) worn around its neck or held in one hand. But if you look closely, you’ll notice a disturbing detail: the dial has numbers, but no hands.
This detail is not a mistake or an oversight; it is the character’s central message:
- Uncertainty: Not knowing the time means death can arrive at any moment. There is no “set time” or prior appointment.
- Arbitrariness: The lack of hands symbolizes that the moment of death is timeless and unpredictable. As the Latin saying goes, Mors certa, hora incerta (Death is certain, the hour is uncertain).
The Clock Dance of Death: Choreography
The Clock follows the collective rhythm with the same half-turn step (180 degrees) as The Platets and the Standard-Bearer, alternating its gaze from left to right with each beat of The Drum.
But this character has a unique and theatrical gesture that sets it apart: from time to time, it stops rotating to raise its free arm and point with its index finger to a random spot on the empty dial.
- One moment it might point to 3, the next to 11… Since there are no hands, each time it points, it “sets” a different, fictional time.
- This gesture reinforces the idea of randomness: any hour could be your last.
Costume and Position
As the closing figure, The Clock walks alone at the very end of the line. It wears the black skeleton costume and a skull mask. Upon entering the church at the end of the procession, it is the last to bow before the altar, leaving behind the final image of the empty clock before darkness once again fills the temple.
