One of the most spectacular yet lesser-known treasures of Holy Week in Verges is the **Verges Snail Street** tradition, known locally as Carrer dels Cargols. You likely won’t find this name on a map, as its official name is Carrer de l’Orient (Orient Street).
Along with Carrer Migdia, these narrow alleys are transformed on the night of Maundy Thursday to welcome the passage of the Dance of Death, illuminated by a unique system based on snail shells, ash, and fire.
The Origins of Verges’ Snail Street
The first written mention of this tradition dates back to the 19th century, but its exact origin remains a mystery. There are two main theories:
- The Offering: Some believe it was an offering from the residents to the mysteries of the Procession, especially to solemnly light the path for the Dance of Death.
- The Tramuntana Wind: The more practical explanation is that these are the only streets sheltered from the strong Tramuntana wind, which prevents the flames from being extinguished as the procession passes.
How the Snail Shell Lamps Are Made
This magical display involves the entire neighborhood and is prepared well in advance:
- Saving the Shells: Throughout the year, Verges locals save shells from traditional snail feasts, cleaning and storing them for Holy Week.
- The Paste and Wick: No artificial adhesive is used. Tradition dictates a paste made from water and filtered ash from fireplaces. This mixture attaches the shell to the wall, and the wick is then secured inside.
- The Oil and Lighting: Once the paste is dry, residents wait for the parade of the Manages to conclude. Around 7:45 PM or 8:00 PM, the shells are filled with oil (often reused). They are lit at the last moment, just as the Procession enters the street.
A Unique Visual Spectacle
The result is an unparalleled atmosphere. The electric lights are turned off, and the stone walls are bathed in the glow of hundreds of small, flickering flames, casting magical shadows and creating the perfect setting to experience the procession.
💡 Expert Tip: Snail Street is one of the most magical and narrowest points on the route. For a front-row view, you must arrive very early. Many attendees bring sandwiches and have dinner there right after the afternoon Manages parade (around 5:30 PM) to hold their spot.
