Dance of Death on Stage in Verges

Although its natural habitat is the dark streets of Verges, the **Verges Dance of Death** makes a chilling star appearance on the stage in the Square that is guaranteed to give you goosebumps.

This performance, part of the wider Maundy Thursday night tradition, is undoubtedly the most anticipated moment for many spectators who won’t see it later in the streets.

Just before the final events of Jesus’s trial unfold, the dry, rhythmic sound of the drum announces that something supernatural is approaching.

Shadows on the Wall

Unlike in the street, lighting plays a key role in the Square. The five skeletons enter the stage, and thanks to the spotlights, their **giant shadows are cast against the stones of the wall** and the bell tower. It’s a powerful and artistic image that can only be seen here.

The Message: “Nemini Parco”

Amidst the drama of Jesus, a core part of The Verges Passion Play, the Dance of Death appears as a universal reminder: time runs out for everyone.

  • The Scythe: Wielded by the Capdanser, it reaps life without distinction.
  • The Banner: It waves the motto Nemini Parco (“I forgive no one”), a message carried by the Standard-Bearer.
  • The Plates and the Clock: The smaller skeletons remind us that time advances inexorably with The Plates of ash and the Clock with no hands.

A Mysterious Interlude

The performance in the Square is brief but intense. The skeletons perform their complete turns and evolutions before the seated audience, allowing for a detailed view of costumes and movements that are often missed in the crowded streets. Once their macabre dance is over, they disappear into the darkness to make way for the final judgment, reminding us that death is the only certainty.
