Maria Perpinyà, 125 years after her birth

At the 2026 National Day celebrations, Verges paid tribute to Maria Perpinyà i Sais with readings from her work. The 125th anniversary of her birth offered an opportunity to remember her contribution to the village’s culture and its Procession.

The Verges Procession combines theatre, music and community participation during Holy Week in the Baix Empordà. On Maundy Thursday, the performance in the Plaça Major, the Procession through the streets and the closing scenes of the Crucifixion and Descent from the Cross turn several spaces in the village into settings for the Passion.

The earliest known documentary reference to the Procession dates from 1666. Its performed texts are the result of a diverse textual tradition, bringing together material drawn from older texts attributed to fra Antoni de Sant Jeroni, adaptations, passages by other authors and later contributions. The article on the Procession’s texts explains this history of versions, authorship and transmission.

The Dansa de la Mort in Verges: symbols and memory

The Dansa de la Mort is one of the Procession’s best-known elements. Five dancers dressed as skeletons move to the rhythm of the Tabal, evoking death and the passage of time. Its history includes continuity and change: successive generations have passed on the dance and renewed elements of its costumes and staging.

The streets of Verges become an open-air stage bringing together performance, music and the work of local people. Preparing the celebration and passing on its roles form part of this shared history.

Maundy Thursday afternoon: Manages and processional images

The Manages parade travels through the village to collect the processional images before the evening performance. The history of the renewal of the Manages’ equipment in 1975–1977 explains one of the renewals of their equipment. The Sopa de Verges, accessible through the button above, is a separate event in the local calendar: it takes place on Shrove Tuesday, before Lent.

Procession route and square performance

The performance in the square is followed by the staged procession through the old village streets during Maundy Thursday night. The Passion’s characters and scenes are distributed between these spaces; to follow them, it helps to distinguish the square performance from the street section.
