Narcís Mir: A Verges Procession Icon

A Man Dedicated to Verges: The Life of Narcís Mir

Narcís Mir, better known to the people of Verges as Siset Mir, was an emblematic and beloved figure in the town. Originally a farmer, health issues forced him to leave fieldwork and reinvent himself as a merchant. Despite personal challenges, his contribution to the village was invaluable.

After the Spanish Civil War, Narcís Mir Verges became a central pillar in the revitalization of local festivities. With a cheerful and entrepreneurial spirit, he was key to restoring the annual Verges Procession. Narcís encouraged locals to recover costumes and props, thus reviving traditions that had been dormant.

He also proudly took on the role of equipment manager for the processions, overseeing the materials and ensuring the event ran smoothly. For over 45 years, his voice was a part of the Stabat Mater choir, and he passionately performed the steps of the Dance of Death.

Cuisine and Culture: The Legacy of Siset Mir

Beyond his involvement in the processions, Narcís Mir was renowned as an exceptional cook. Every Easter Monday, he was responsible for preparing the popular rice dish that celebrated the end of Holy Week. Following a recipe inherited from his predecessor, Narcís became the heart of the celebration, cooking with an expert eye and dedicating himself fully to the town.

The associative and cultural life of Verges benefited enormously from the dedication of Narcís Mir. For years, he was the cook for La Sopa, a central dish in many local celebrations. He also spent countless hours on the meticulous preparation of the Procession.

His skill in repairing armor and dressing participants in the Dance of Death highlights the breadth of his commitment to the tradition and heritage of Verges.

Recognition for his dedication came on December 18, 1992, when the Verges Town Council honored Narcís Mir by naming him the town’s Favorite Son. This distinction was a well-deserved tribute to a lifetime dedicated to the village he loved so dearly.
