Carles Perpinyà Sais: Director of the Procession

Carles Perpinyà Sais (1918–1989) was a key figure in the modern history of the Verges Procession. As the brother of writer Maria Perpinyà, he led the theatrical restructuring and route redesign, shaping the event into the form we know today.

Carles Perpinyà Sais’s Visionary Restructuring

In 1950, he was appointed director and made a pivotal decision: to consolidate all the separate performances that were still being held in different parts of the town.

He also introduced an entrance fee to address the significant financial losses faced by the organizing board, ensuring the event’s sustainability.

The restructuring was a complex undertaking. Carles believed the language needed to be adapted and modernized without losing the original script’s fidelity, entrusting his sister Maria with revising the text.

In 1978, in recognition of his hard work and dedication, the board named him an honorary member.

He passed away on Holy Tuesday, March 21, 1989, just two days before the Procession was set to take to the streets again. That year, the Manages held a minute of silence in his memory.
