If the five skeletons are the body of the Danse Macabre, The Drummer is its heart. As the sole musician of the group, the Verges Dance of Death Drummer is responsible for the hypnotic, sharp beat that echoes off the stone walls of Verges during the night of Maundy Thursday.
The Drummer is not just an accompanist; he is the director of destiny. Without his beat, the dance cannot exist.
The Unique Attire of the Verges Dance of Death Drummer
Unlike the Capdanser or The Platets, the Drummer does not wear the tight-fitting skeleton costume. His appearance is more solemn and mysterious.
He wears a black hooded tunic (traditionally purple or lilac in Verges), black gloves, and espadrilles with bones painted on them. To maintain the macabre aesthetic, his face is covered by a skull-shaped helmet or mask. He resembles a kind of monk or penitent from beyond the grave, guiding the souls.
The Secret Rhythm: “Thump… thump-thump”
The magic of the Drummer lies in his cadence. It is not a military roll or a festive march but a deep, resonant sound. The rhythmic pattern is cyclical and consists of three beats:
- One long (accented) beat.
- Followed by two short, quick beats.
This constant “Thump… thump-thump” acts like an unstoppable ticking clock or the fading beat of a heart. The skeletons synchronize their jumps precisely to this pattern: the strong beat marks the jump’s impulse, while the short beats mark the landing and preparation.
The Power of Silence
The Drummer holds absolute authority over the procession. He decides when to dance and when to rest. At certain points along the route, or when arriving in front of the church, the drum suddenly falls silent.
In that moment, a powerful dramatic effect occurs: the five skeletons freeze in place, motionless, until the sound resumes. It is the perfect metaphor for life: it lasts as long as the heart (the drum) beats; when it stops, everything ends.
Indispensable and Ancient
The use of a single percussion instrument is a direct medieval inheritance. In the Middle Ages, this monotonous sound helped mark the pace in the dark streets and instill a sense of fear and reverence, a function that has remained intact to this day.
