The Procession of Verges is one of the crown jewels of Catalan culture and an unmissable event during Holy Week in Baix Empordà (Girona). From sunset on Maundy Thursday until the moon illuminates the ancient stone streets, Verges transforms into a living stage that has captivated generations.
With a documented history dating back to 1666, this celebration has stood the test of time while maintaining its essence. The performance is based on the 1773 literary work by Fra Antoni de Sant Jeroni, making it a living testimony of faith and medieval folk tradition.
The Danse de la Mort: A Unique Symbol
Within the Procession of Verges, the most iconic and internationally recognized element is undoubtedly the Danse de la Mort (Dance of Death). This itinerant performance connects us with medieval beliefs about the fragility of life, where five skeletons dance to the beat of a drum in a solemn spectacle unique in Europe.
Every year, the stone streets of Verges become an open-air theater where residents and visitors share a rich cultural heritage of music, poetry, and traditional dances.
Maundy Thursday Afternoon: Manages and Soup
The activity begins early. At 5:00 PM, the Manages parade (Roman soldiers) takes place. It is also the perfect time to discover the tradition of the Verges Soup (Sopa de Verges), a historic community meal that defines the spirit of this special day.
Procession Route and Square Performance
As the night progresses, the atmosphere becomes mystical. The theatrical representation in the Main Square leads to the procession through the old town streets, guided by torchlight and the deep sound of drums. This march through ancient cobblestones is a path for contemplation and silence.
Tips for Visiting Verges in 2027
If you plan to visit us this year, we recommend arriving early in the afternoon to enjoy the village atmosphere. The street decorations and the preparation of the “mysteries” by the locals is a community effort well worth seeing up close.
