Sacred Heart of Jesus: origin, meaning and date

The Sacred Heart of Jesus is a solemnity dedicated to the love of Christ, symbolised by his heart. It is celebrated after Corpus Christi and belongs to the group of movable feasts linked to the date of Easter.

When is the Sacred Heart celebrated?

The date changes every year. In the Roman calendar, the Sacred Heart of Jesus is celebrated on the Friday after the second Sunday after Pentecost. In 2027, it falls on Friday 4 June.

It comes after Corpus Christi, extending the Paschal calendar into late spring or early summer.

Origin and meaning

Devotion to the Sacred Heart developed especially in modern Catholic spirituality, while drawing on older ways of contemplating the love of Christ. The heart is a symbol of self-giving love, mercy and compassion.

The feast connects naturally with the message of Holy Week. The Passion is not only a story of suffering; it is also understood as the sign of love given to the end. The Sacred Heart keeps that meaning alive after Easter.

A link with Verges

In the Verges Procession, the self-giving love of Christ is shown through the drama of the Passion. The Sacred Heart belongs to a later part of the calendar, but it helps visitors read the same mystery through the language of love and mercy.

The following day is the Immaculate Heart of Mary, a related feast focused on Mary.
