Saint John: The Beloved Disciple

Among the twelve apostles in the Verges Procession, the figure of Saint John holds a special place of affection and tenderness. On Maundy Thursday, he embodies absolute fidelity and serenity in the face of tragedy.

Known as the “beloved disciple,” John is one of the few figures who remains by Jesus’ side until his last breath on the cross.

Spiritual Proximity at the Last Supper

During the performance of the Last Supper in the main square, John’s position is highly symbolic. He is typically placed right next to the Master, reflecting the trust and love that binds them.

Although the more passionate dialogues in this scene fall to Peter, John’s silent presence brings a sense of peace and contemplation essential to the scene.

Furthermore, according to the New Testament script enacted, he is a direct witness to the institution of the Eucharist. For this reason, his character embodies the purest reception of Jesus’ message before the ordeal of the arrest begins.

Saint John in the Garden of Gethsemane

Later, in the scene at the Garden of Gethsemane, John is part of the small group that accompanies Jesus to pray. The script dictates that, along with Peter and James the Greater, he joins Jesus on stage, where he is overcome by exhaustion and falls asleep by the fire.

Despite this human weakness shared with the other apostles, John is the one who reacts most attentively when Jesus returns to ask them to keep watch with him.

His presence at this moment foreshadows his unconditional fidelity, as, unlike others, he will never leave the Virgin Mary’s side during the procession through the town.

Iconography of Saint John in the Verges Procession

The portrayal of Saint John in the Verges Procession is one of the most aesthetic and recognizable. He typically wears a light-coloured tunic with a vibrant red cloak, symbolising both his youth and his future martyrdom.

In essence, Saint John is not just a secondary character in the sacred drama; he is the personification of faithful friendship. His role as Mary’s guardian during the procession makes him one of the most cherished emotional pillars for the people of Verges.
