Easter, known locally as Pasqua Florida or the Sunday of the Resurrection, is the central feast of Christianity. According to the Gospels, it celebrates Jesus’ resurrection after his death on the cross. The celebration begins with the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night and continues with Sunday’s Masses.
Easter does not end with this one day. It opens the Easter season, a period of fifty days culminating in Pentecost. The joy of the Resurrection continues through the celebrations following Holy Week; the Easter cycle places them in their wider context.
Why does the date change?
Easter Sunday is a movable feast. In the Gregorian calendar used by the Catholic Church and many other Western churches, it falls between 22 March and 25 April. The ecclesiastical calculation refers to the equinox and the paschal full moon; it is not simply a matter of watching the moon in the sky that year.
Many Eastern churches use the Julian reckoning to determine Easter, which can produce different dates. Read more about why Holy Week changes date or use the Holy Week calculator.
Easter Sunday in Verges
In Verges, this Sunday has a quieter rhythm after the intensity of Maundy Thursday. It is time to rest, catch up with family and share a meal. Religious observance and family celebrations sit alongside one another, with everyone marking the day in their own way.
Those attending Easter Mass celebrate the Resurrection there. Gatherings with relatives and friends give the rest of the day a homely feel, away from the preparations and bustle of the Procession’s great night.
The mona: a gift from godparents
The mona de Pasqua has a special place in the celebrations. Godparents traditionally give this Easter cake to their godchildren. It may be a cake decorated with eggs, a pastry-shop creation topped with chocolate figures, or a combination of the two. Its appearance has changed, but the gift still delights younger children.
Families do not all give or eat it on the same day. Some give it on Sunday, while others share it on Easter Monday. This Catalan tradition is part of family gatherings in Verges too, without prescribing a single way to celebrate.
Religious service times
Mass times can change from year to year and depend on parish arrangements. Before attending, confirm the Easter programme with the parish of Sant Julià i Santa Basilissa in Verges or check the Diocese of Girona’s parish information. A timetable from a previous edition should not be assumed to apply every year.
