Pere Perich Rocas | History of the Verges Procession

Pere Perich Rocas (Verges 1892-1964)

Grandfather Perich, as everyone knew and remembers him, was the son of a farming family. He had two brothers, and since none of them wanted to continue the family trade, he took on the responsibility. However, before that, he studied for two or three months at the Franciscan convent in La Bisbal d’Empordà. These studies, though brief, later helped him to enrich the procession’s dialogues with biblical quotes. He played several roles: a Jew, God (a character separate from Jesus carrying the cross), Pilate, and he also served as the director.

At his home, he kept an original version of the script, on whose cover was written: “Representació de la Sagrada Passió y Mort de Nostre Senyor Jesu-Crist per lo M.R.Fr. Anton de St. Geroni (Lleyda 1870)”.

As a right-winger, he was persecuted during the Spanish Civil War. To preserve his treasure, he decided to hide the script in a ditch in his vineyard. Once the war was over and the danger had passed, he typed out the entire text so that future generations could use it.
