Verges Procession Schedule: Tradition vs. Change

In 2026, the Verges Procession schedule has undergone a significant change. The start of the street procession, historically set at midnight, has been moved forward to 11:30 PM. This seemingly minor adjustment conceals a profound alteration to the theological essence of our festival.

For decades, the event has been governed by meticulous timing. The theatrical performance in the Main Square depicts the Last Supper and Jesus’ condemnation by Pontius Pilate. All these events are canonically set within the traditions of Maundy Thursday.

To understand this tradition, one must grasp the precise reason why the street procession began exactly as the clock struck midnight.

The Exact Boundary: From Maundy to Good Friday

According to Catholic Church doctrine, the Way of the Cross and the subsequent falls of Jesus must be represented exclusively on Good Friday.

The precision of this schedule was no accident. This historical brilliance was established and defended by former organisers and pivotal figures of our culture, such as Carles Perpinyà Sais and Maria Perpinyà Sais.

Their vision was to use the stroke of midnight as an unbreachable natural and liturgical boundary:

  • Before 12:00 AM: Condemnation in the square (Maundy Thursday).
  • From 12:00 AM onwards: The procession and crucifixion begin (Good Friday).

By moving the procession’s start time to 11:30 PM, the cross is brought into the streets and the suffering is depicted while it is, officially and liturgically, still Maundy Thursday. This is an anomaly that breaks the narrative’s coherence.

Modern Logistics vs. Centuries-Old Tradition

It is undeniable that adjusting the Verges Procession schedule can enhance visitor convenience. Ending the events earlier simplifies late-night logistics and allows for an easier journey home for the thousands who visit our town.

However, as promoters and lovers of our culture, we must reflect on the cost of these concessions. Changing the schedule means sacrificing the historical rigour and orthodoxy that have made this celebration a unique benchmark.

The Verges Procession is more than just a visual spectacle of actors, lights, and the famous Dance of Death. It is a living heritage where every minute, every step, and every silence has a purpose deeply rooted in history.

Author’s Note:

After publishing this article, I had the opportunity to speak informally with Agustí, a member of the Association. Hearing his firsthand explanations of the complex logistical needs they manage, I can understand and even share the reasons behind this schedule adjustment.

Nevertheless, a sincere reflection remains: in a living event of this magnitude, schedules should be seen as a guide, not a strict countdown. The solemnity of the Procession and the natural flow of the night need room to breathe. As a lover of our traditions, I am comforted knowing the Procession is in good hands and that, regardless of the exact minute the first step is taken, the respect and devotion remain unchanged.
